Why a Fireside?

"Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD." — Isaiah 1:18

There's something about a fire that draws people in. Not the blaze of a bonfire or the utility of a camp stove — but the steady, crackling warmth of a hearthside flame. It's the kind of fire that makes you pull up a chair, settle in, and stay awhile.

This blog takes its name from that image. Not because I have all the answers, but because I believe the best conversations about God happen not in lecture halls or behind pulpits, but in the warmth of humble, honest inquiry.

The subtitle — Warming the Soul with Scripture — isn't just poetic. It's the mission. God's Word is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). But it's also bread (Matthew 4:4), water (John 7:38), and light (Psalm 119:105). It sustains. It nourishes. It warms the soul when the world feels cold.

What You'll Find Here

This isn't a devotional blog in the traditional sense. It's also not an academic theology journal. It's somewhere in between — a space to think deeply about Scripture without losing sight of how it applies to daily life.

Most posts will center on the Heidelberg Catechism, a 463-year-old confession of faith that remains one of the clearest, most pastoral guides to Christian doctrine ever written. If you've never heard of it, don't worry. You're not behind. You're exactly where you need to be.

Each post will be short — no more than a few minutes to read. The goal isn't to impress you with scholarship, but to point you back to the Bible. If something here sparks deeper study, that's exactly the point.

Why Reformed?

Some readers will recognize the terms Reformed and Covenant in the blog's DNA. Others might not know what those words mean — and that's okay.

At its core, Reformed theology is simply this: God saves sinners by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, for His glory alone.

That's not controversial. That's the gospel.

The Heidelberg Catechism takes those truths and unpacks them with warmth, clarity, and pastoral care. It's not about being "Reformed" as a tribal identity. It's about being grounded in Scripture and shaped by grace.

If you're not Reformed, you're still welcome here. The Catechism is rooted in the Bible, and the Bible is for all believers.

Pull Up a Chair

My name is Dustin Ohman. I'm a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant, an elder at Christ Our Hope Covenant Reformed Church, and a student of God's Word. I live in Davao, Philippines with my wife Judy, where I also serve in outreach ministry.

I'm not a seminary graduate. I don't have letters after my name. What I have is a deep love for Scripture, a conviction that doctrine matters, and a desire to help others grow in their understanding of the gospel.

This blog is my way of doing that — one post at a time, one Scripture at a time, one truth at a time.

So pull up a chair. Stay awhile. Let the fire warm your soul.

Soli Deo Gloria — To God alone be the glory.
