Lord's Day 17: The Resurrection
Monday — Christ Has Overcome Death
The Catechism
Q45. How does Christ's resurrection benefit us?
First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he could make us share in the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death. 1 Second, by his power we too are raised up to a new life. 2 Third, Christ's resurrection is to us a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection. 3 1. Rom 4:25; 1 Cor 15:16-20; 1 Pet 1:3-5. 2. Rom 6:5-11; Eph 2:4-6; Col 3:1-4. 3. Rom 8:11; 1 Cor 15:12-23; Phil 3:20, 21.
Today's Emphasis
The resurrection is not merely a historical event but the decisive victory over death itself. Because Christ conquered death, the power of death over believers is broken. This is the foundation of our hope.
Scripture Readings
1 Corinthians 15:54-57
"Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? ... But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 6:9
"We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him."
From the Reformers
John Calvin (Institutes of the Christian Religion, 2.16.13)
"By his resurrection, Christ abolished death; by his ascension, he abolished the kingdom of death. For he arose, that he might make us partakers of the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death."
Reflection Questions
• In what areas of your life do you still feel the fear or power of death? How does Christ's victory speak to those fears?
• What does it mean practically to share in the righteousness Christ obtained through His death and resurrection?
