Lord's Day 11 — Tuesday: The Exclusivity of Salvation

Lord's Day 11: God the Son - The Name 'Jesus Christ'

Tuesday — The Exclusivity of Salvation

The Catechism

Q29. Why is the Son of God called 'Jesus,' meaning 'savior'?

Because he saves us from our sins, and because salvation should not be sought and cannot be found in anyone else.

Q30. Do those who look for their salvation in saints, in themselves, or elsewhere really believe in the only savior Jesus?

No. Although they boast of being his, by their actions they deny the only savior, Jesus. Either Jesus is not a perfect savior, or those who by true faith accept this savior must find in him all that is necessary for their salvation.

Today's Emphasis

As we reflect on the second question of the catechism, we recognize that salvation is found solely in Christ, emphasizing the futility of looking elsewhere.

Scripture Readings

Acts 4:12

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

From the Reformers

Ursinus (Heidelberg Catechism)

"Salvation is not to be found apart from Christ."

Reflection Questions

• In what ways do we sometimes seek salvation outside of Christ?

• How can understanding this truth shape our faith?
