Lord's Day 11 — Monday: The Meaning of 'Jesus'
Lord's Day 11: God the Son - The Name 'Jesus Christ'
Monday — The Meaning of 'Jesus'
The Catechism
Q29. Why is the Son of God called 'Jesus,' meaning 'savior'?
Because he saves us from our sins, and because salvation should not be sought and cannot be found in anyone else.
Q30. Do those who look for their salvation in saints, in themselves, or elsewhere really believe in the only savior Jesus?
No. Although they boast of being his, by their actions they deny the only savior, Jesus. Either Jesus is not a perfect savior, or those who by true faith accept this savior must find in him all that is necessary for their salvation.
Today's Emphasis
Today we explore why the Son of God is specifically called 'Jesus', which means 'savior'. This name signifies the profound truth that he actively saves us from our sins.
Scripture Readings
Matthew 1:21
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
From the Reformers
