Lord's Day 11 — Friday: Rejecting False Salvations
Lord's Day 11: God the Son - The Name 'Jesus Christ'
Friday — Rejecting False Salvations
The Catechism
Q29. Why is the Son of God called 'Jesus,' meaning 'savior'?
Because he saves us from our sins, and because salvation should not be sought and cannot be found in anyone else.
Q30. Do those who look for their salvation in saints, in themselves, or elsewhere really believe in the only savior Jesus?
No. Although they boast of being his, by their actions they deny the only savior, Jesus. Either Jesus is not a perfect savior, or those who by true faith accept this savior must find in him all that is necessary for their salvation.
Today's Emphasis
We reflect on the dangers of placing faith in saints, self, or any other source rather than Jesus, as warned in the catechism.
Scripture Readings
Galatians 1:8
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
From the Reformers
Luther (The Large Catechism)
"To depend on other mediators is to deny Christ's saving work."
Reflection Questions
• In what areas do you tend to rely on yourself or others for salvation?
• How can we encourage one another to focus solely on Jesus?
