About Hearthside

Welcome to Hearthside — a place to warm your soul with Scripture.

I'm Dustin Ohman, a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant and elder at Christ Our Hope Covenant Reformed Church. After years of service to my country, I've found my deepest calling in serving the body of Christ through teaching, preaching, and shepherding.

This blog is born from two simple convictions:

First, that God's Word is alive and active. Not a dusty relic, but daily bread. The Scriptures speak to every season of life — in the barracks and the boardroom, in joy and in grief, in certainty and in doubt.

Second, that the historic Reformed faith offers clarity in a confused age. The Heidelberg Catechism, written in 1563, has guided millions of believers to understand the gospel with both mind and heart. Its 129 questions and answers are a treasure map to the riches of Scripture.

What You'll Find Here

  • Daily Scripture Reflections — Short meditations paired with passages from the Heidelberg Catechism
  • Reformed Theology — Explorations of doctrine that shape how we live, not just what we believe
  • Life & Faith — Honest reflections on discipleship, family, service, and following Christ in a fallen world

This isn't a pulpit. It's a fireside conversation. Pull up a chair.

A Word About the Format

Each post is intentionally brief — no more than a few minutes to read. My goal isn't to impress you with scholarship, but to point you back to the Word. If something here sparks deeper study, that's exactly the point.

The Heidelberg Catechism posts follow a 52-week cycle, covering all 129 questions. You can jump in at any point. Each Lord's Day (the Catechism's weekly divisions) includes Scripture references for further study.

Background

I live in Davao, Philippines with my wife Judy, where I also serve in outreach ministry. I'm a graduate of the Marine Corps, not seminary — which means I approach theology as a student, not an expert. That's probably why the Heidelberg Catechism resonates so deeply: it was written for laypeople, not academics.
